1
Q

Ejaculation takes place in…

A

uterus

2
Q

Infundibulum

A

Covers ovulation fossa

3
Q

Ampulla

A

Sperm passage

4
Q

Where does fertilization happen?

A

Ampullary-isthmic junction

5
Q

Embryo transport to uterus length?

A

5.5 to 6 days.

6
Q

Compact morula

A

6 day old structure. Has zona pellucida.

7
Q

Blastocyst

A

Found in uterine lumen. Loses zona pellucida. Structure is 7 to 8 days old. Has inner cell mass, blastocoele cavity, and has a capsule.
Capsule is unique to mares and is made up of a glycoprotein structure.

8
Q

Expanded blastocyst

A

Day 7 structure. Can be seen with naked eye. Still has inner cell mass.

9
Q

UFO

A

Unfertilized oocyte. Compact football shape. Dark cells, clearly dead. Not expelled out of uterus, must be flushed to retrieve.

10
Q

Twins

A

Not well tolerated in mares. Recommended termination of one of the fetuses.

11
Q

Early embryo nutrition

A

Young embryo must be mobile for 17 days. Yolk sac depletes over time.

12
Q

Endometrial cups

A

Comes at day 37. Sticks around for 150 to 200 days. If pregnancy ends after day 37 then cup remains causing a pseudopregnancy.

13
Q

Relative maternal progesterone concentrations

A

14
Q

Placenta

A

Diffuse.
Epitheliochorial.
Non-deciduate.
Microplacentomes.

15
Q

Length of gestation

A

320-360 days

16
Q

Fetal maturation

A

Occurs in the last week of gestation. Cortisol rise in last 48 hours. Premature delivery is devastating due to this, lungs ect. are not ready till after cortisol rises.

17
Q

Colostrum

A

Has immunoglobulins. Foal has to receive in first 8 to 12 hours.

18
Q

Mammary secretion of electrolytes.

A

Changes correlated with fetal maturity. Ca> 40 mg/dl.

Increased K and decreased Na.

19
Q

Cervical dialtion

A

Occurs prior to parturition. Faster delivery. Improved neonatal adaptability.

20
Q

Stage 1 of parturition

A

1-4 hours.

Fetus (hopefully) changes position so feet and head face out.

21
Q

Stage 2 of parturition

A

30-60 mins.

Fetus expulsion.

22
Q

Stage 3 of parturition

A

Less than 3 hours.

Placental expulsion. If over 3 hours, considered retained. Can be an emergency.
