What is a Phenothiazine?
Acepromazine (ACP)
Why do we not give ACP to emergency patients?
Because it causes hypotension and emergency patients will probably already have low blood pressure anyway.
What are the side effects of ACP?
- Hypotension
- Hypothermia
- Cardiac dysrhythmia following IV administration
- Decreased seizure threshold - controversial.
What are the side effects of Atropine?
- Tachycardia
- Cardiac arrhythmias
- confusion
- Dry mouth
- Mydriasis
What surgery is atropine good for and why?
BOAS surgery because it prevents salivation and secretions in the mouth.
What pathways does ACP inhibit?
Dopamine
What breed has an over sensitivity to ACP?
Boxers
Why might ACP be contra-indicated in patients with GI issues?
Because it reduces movement in smooth muscle including the intestines.
Wha are the uses of medetomidine?
- Sedation
- Premedication
What can you use to reverse medetomidine?
- Atipamezole.
What 3 things does opioids provide?
- analgesia, sedation & relaxation.
What does NSAID stand for? and what do they do?
- Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug.
- It inhibits the COX enzymes of the brain.
What does COX stand for?
Cyclooxygenase.
