Q

There are two methods used to prepare aqueous solutions:

A

1) Dissolving a measured mass of pure solute in a certain volume of solution

2) Diluting a solution of known concentration

3
Q

Before you start

A

determine the volume and concentration of the solution

to solve for moles (n = v x c)

solve for mass of solute (m = n x M)

Weigh this mass, and add it to the predetermined volume of water

Q

When you are diluting a fully concentrated acid,

A

you will always solve for V1, the amount of fully concentrated acid needed for your new solution

Q

ALWAYS ADD

A

ACID TO WATER

This mixing is a very exothermic reaction (you will feel the beaker getting warmer), and adding water to the top of acid may cause it to boil instantly, splashing corrosive acid all over your million dollar hands!
