Describe the terms of a patient specific direction (PSD)?
Supply/administration of a medicine or medicines for a specific named patient after the prescriber has assessed the patient individually
Describe the terms of a patient group direction (PGD)?
Supply/administration of specified medicine or medicines for a well-defined group of patients for a specific condition by a named HCP

Within 72 hours.
Which CDs cannot be supplied as an emergency suppy?
Schedule 1,2,3 (With the exception of phenobarbitone)
Can emergency supplies be provided to animals?
No- just humans
Can an emergency supply be made if the patient’s doctors surgery is open?
Yes
What is the maximum supply that can be made for an emergency supply (Excluding schedule 4 + 5 CDs or phenobarbitone)
30 days

How do records differ between emergency supply at the request of a prescriber and emergency supply at the request of a patient?
The same, but at request of a patient doesn’t need prescriber details and must give a reason for the emergency supply.
How do label requirements differ between emergency supply at the request of a prescriber and emergency supply at the request of a patient?
At the request of a patient- must have ‘emergency supply’ printed on label.
Is a signed order by a podiatrist/ optometrist classed as a prescription?
No- but pharmacists can supply POMs against a signed order by optometrist/podiatrist
Do prescription requirements apply to a signed order?
No
Do labelling requirements apply to a POM supplied against a signed order by optometrist/ podiatrist?
Yes
Does a record in the POM register need to be made against a signed order by podiatrist/ optometrist?

No- professionak judgement should be used
Does a POM entry need to be made for a signed order for a school?
No- it is good practise. However, if POM register entry not made then signed order must be retained for 2 years from date of supply.
