primary succession Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is primary succession?
The gradual change in plant and animal communities from colonisation by pioneer species to the climax community.
What are the first species to colonise an area?
Pioneer species.
What happens at each stage of succession?
Certain species change the abiotic factors.
What do these changes do to the environment?
It becomes less suitable for the previous species.
What will happen to the abiotic environment?
A less hostile environment and changing the species diversity.
What is formed in the last stage?
A climax community.
Why are climax communities often not established?
Agricultural practices such as grazing, crop production, ploughing etc.
What can prevent the sequence of succession?
Fires and floods.
