Primitive Streak & Germ Layer Derivatives Flashcards
(29 cards)
What is the first sign of gastrulation?
Formation of the primitive streak (Day 14)
Which cells proliferate to form the primitive streak?
Epiblast cells
Where does the primitive streak begin?
Caudal end of the embryonic disc
In which direction does the primitive streak grow?
Caudal → Cranial direction
What does the primitive streak allow the epiblast cells to do?
Migrate ventrally and form 3 germ layers (Gastrulation)
Where is the ectoderm located in relation to the embryo?
Floor of the amniotic cavity (dorsal)
Where is the endoderm located?
Roof of the yolk sac cavity (ventral)
Where is the mesoderm located?
Between ectoderm and endoderm
Which two regions are formed by ectoderm and endoderm without mesoderm?
- Buccopharyngeal membrane (cranial)
- Cloacal membrane (caudal)
What is the role of the notochord?
Formed from mesoderm
Induces overlying ectoderm to become neuroectoderm → forms nervous system
What is the primitive node (Hensen’s node)?
Cranial end of the primitive streak – organizer of notochord & axial structures
What are the key regions of the primitive streak from cranial to caudal?
- Primitive node (Hensen’s node)
- Primitive pit (blastopore)
- Primitive groove
What is the order of germ layer formation during gastrulation?
- Endoderm (first to invaginate)
- Mesoderm
- Ectoderm (remaining epiblast)
What are the fates of the germ layers?
Ectoderm → Skin, CNS, PNS
Mesoderm → Muscle, Bone, CVS
Endoderm → Gut tube, Organs (Liver, Lungs, etc.)
What is the embryonic “shield”?
Bilaminar disc (epiblast + hypoblast) at early stage; transforms during gastrulation
What is the first structure that marks the cranial end of the embryo?
Prochordal plate (aka Prechordal plate)
Which membrane appears just posterior to the prochordal plate?
Buccopharyngeal membrane
What does the prochordal plate define?
The cranial (anterior) end of the embryo
When does the primitive streak appear?
End of 2nd week (around Day 14)
What is the location of the primitive streak?
Floor of the amniotic cavity, arising from epiblast cells
What are the 3 parts of the primitive streak?
- Primitive Knot / Node / Hensen’s Node (cranial end)
- Primitive Pit / Blastopore
- Primitive Groove (longitudinal depression)
What forms the notochord?
Epiblast cells migrate into the primitive pit and move cranially to form the notochord (axial mesoderm)
What forms before the notochord during axial development?
Prechordal (Prochordal) Plate
What is located at the caudal end of the primitive streak?
Cloacal membrane
