What is growth sometimes referred to as?
Physiological change.
When do infants reach roughly half their adult height?
By the age of two.
When is full height typically reached?
By the start of early adulthood (19 to 45 years).
What do adolescents experience during puberty?
Growth spurts, when height increases rapidly over a short period.
What are the four principles of growth?
- Growth rates are not constant.
- Different parts of the body grow at different rates.
- Growth rates vary between children.
- The growth rate of boys is usually faster on average than that of girls.
How is head circumference measured?
At birth and at 6-8 weeks to identify any abnormality in brain or skull growth.
When is an infant’s length measured?
When lying down during the first two years.
When is height measured for children?
When standing, from 2 years old.
What does growth indicate?
Children’s health and wellbeing.
What do growth charts represent?
Measurements plotted to show ‘norms’ of growth in each age group.
Why are growth charts different for boys and girls?
Because their expected rate of growth varies.
What is an example of a measurement a nurse will take for an infant?
Weight.
Infants triple their weight in their first year.
What are two other measurements the nurse will take for Baby Brad?
Length or height and head circumference.
