Hierarchy of needs.

Level 1 - basic physiological needs - food and shelter
Level 2 - safety

Q

What is Herzberg?

A

Herzberg has taken the first three levels of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (sleep food shelter, safety, companionship) and called them extrinsic factors, I.e hygiene factors.

They are the working environment and can be compared with site facilities etc.

Herzberg suggests removing factors which distract from performance (unfair working practices, poor management) and seeks out ways for employees to get more recognition, challenges and satisfaction.

What is situational leadership theory?

A

Hersey and Blanchard developed it. Based on the amount of direction (task behaviour) and the amount of socio-emotional support (relationship behaviour) a leader must provide in that specific situation linked to the level of maturity.

Q

What is level of maturity and how does it link in with Hersey and Blanchard’s situational leadership theory?

A

It is about setting high but attainable goals and the level of support and close supervision depends on the task.

For example - I might give Annette autonomy on tracking but give her lots of support on risk management.
