What are the principles of the constitution?
- Separation of powers

What is separation of powers?
All branches are separate. You cannot exist in more than one branch of cabinet.
What are checks and balances?
A system that allows each branch of a government to amend of veto acts of another branch so as to prevent any one branch from exerting too much power
What is federalism?
The equal separating of powers between federal (national) governments and state governments.
What is bipartisanship?
The idea that political parties HAVE to work together in order to get things done.
What is a limited government?
The inclusion of separation of powers and checks and balances.
What is an example of separation of powers?
President Obama asked Hillary Clinton to be part of his cabinet as Secretary of State, this meant she had to give up her role as a Senator.
Jeff Sessions was a senator until 2017 when he stepped down to server the Trump administration.
Deb Haaland and Marcia Fudge had to step down as Representatives in the House in order to be in Biden’s cabinet.
What is an example of checks and balances?
Trump was defeated in the Skinny repeal in 2017 despite a majority in both houses
What is an example of federalism?
Marijuana remains illegal at a federal level under the Controlled Substances Act, but is legal for medical use in 38 states, and for recreation use in 23 states.
What is an example of bipartisanship?
The ‘Gang of Eight’ was a group in the Senate of 4 Democrats and 4 Republicans who worked together to create the bipartisan bill of Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernisation Act, which passed in the Senate but not the house.
What is an example of limited government?
In Texas v. US 2016, an Executive Order (DAPA) by Obama was struck down by the Supreme Court
