Probability and Significance Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is probability?
measurement of the likelihood that an event will occur
What is significance?
statistical term that tells us how sure we are that a difference or correlation exists
What is a type 1 error?
false +ve
accepting a hypothesis when it’s false
- likely to happen if the significance level is too lenient (0.1-10% instead of 0.05)
What is a type 2 error?
++false -ve**
when a real difference in data is ignored and wrongly accepted as being insignificant
- accepting the null hypothesis in error
What is a level of significance?
tells us how likely a piece of evidence is due to chance
(we use 0.05-5%)
Why is a 5% level of significance used?
strikes a balance between the risk of making a type 1 and 2 error
When is a type 2 error likely to occur
when a 0.01 level of significance was used instead of 0.05
