Problems Faced By Elizabeth Flashcards
(7 cards)
What had happened to Mary Queen of Scots before going to England?
She was kicked out of Scotland and had a forced abdication because of her behaviour in 1567.
What happened when Mary queen of Scots went to England?
As she was a Catholic (Elizabeth 1 was protestant) and wanted to rule England, she was imprisoned (not rlly-luxurious guarded house).
Why was Mary executed?
She was executed because Liz’s advisor Walsingham, in 1586, got evidence (many believe to be forged) Mary wrote to someone about a plot targeted at Elizabeth
What was the Babington plot?
Sir Anthony Babington had been plotting to kill Elizabeth 1 and put Mary of Scots on the English throne. Coded letters between him and Mary were proof enough for him, Mary, and 6 other plotters to be executed in August 1586.
Why did King Philip of Spain send an Armada to England (3 reasons)?
Elizabeth 1 rejected him, she helped Spain’s enemies into the Netherlands, she executed Mary Queen of Scots - a Catholic Queen. (Elizabeth was protestant, Philip was Catholic)
When did King Philip 11 of Spain send an armada to England?
1588
Why did the armada fail?
Widely believed it was just the weather-not true. Elizabeth’s spies in Spain hear abt invasion, Francis drake (sea captain) attacks armada-cadiz as they’re picking up soldiers, giving E time to prepare- lights beacons. England sends fire ships - forces Spanish to scatter and breaks their crescent formation. Strong winds push em towards Gravelines - battle of Gravelines. England, coz of their small, fast and maneuverable ships, caused a lot of damage. Wind forces Spanish to go up around Scotland, Ireland, shipwrecks, arrive back at Spain with most ships lost
