Question 1

Metered dose inhaler (MDI)

Answer 1

1. remove cap
2. shake vigorously
3. breathe out all the air
4. place inhaler 1-2 in from mouth - use spacer if they have one
5. depress inhaler while inhaling deeply (3-5 seconds)
6. hold breath several seconds after inhalation complete
7. exhale through pursed lips
8. wait 2-5 min to repeat
9. rinse mouth with water after

Dry powder inhalation (DPI)

Answer 2

1. do NOT shake
2. load medication
3. exhale before inhalation
4. position mouthpiece between lips
5. inhale deeply
6. hold breath 5-10 seconds
   * gagging sensation may occur
