Order the stages of law making process
1.First Reading
2.Second Reading
3.Committee stage
4.Report stage
5.Third Reading
6.The Lords
7.Royal Assent
What happens in the first reading
-The Government introduces the bill to the commons(sometimes the lords)
-This is the formal announcement of the bill
-This is then followed by a vote
What happens in the Second Reading
-The main principles of the bill are considered
-This is then debated and voted in the house of commons
-If the Government have the support of the majority of the mps, they win the vote
-The bill then goes through to the next stage
What happens in the committee stage
-The bill is looked at in detail(examined line by line)
-This is done by a small committee of mps, from different parties
-They then report back to the House Of Commons
-They may propose any amendments/Changes to the bill
What happens in the Report stage
-The mps opportunity to look at the report from the committee
-Debate and vote on the amendments
-Some major bills may hold debates for several days
What happens in the Third Reading
-Final chance for the commons to to debate the bill
-No further amendments are allowed and the House Of Commons votes to reject or pass the bill
What happens in the Lords
-Bill goes back to the House Of Lords
-Goes through the same stages as the commons, Mps then debate to accept and reject their amendments
-House Of Commons have the final say as they are elected Representatives of the public
What happens in the Royal Assent
-One passed through both houses the bill is signed by the monarch
-This is their agreement to turn the pill into an act of parliament/law
-The law then comes straight into force
