What is metal turning?
Metal turning is a material removal process used to create rotational parts by cutting unwanted material. Metal turning process a machining process where a lathe is used to rotate the metal while a cutting tool moves in a linear motion to remove metal along the diameter, creating a cylindrical shape.
Advantages of metal turning
- cost effective
- greater flexibility
- design quicker.
Disadvantages of metal turning
- only rotatable components are permitted
- expensive equipment
- creates a substantial amount of scrap material.
What is Stamping/punching?
Stamping andpunchingarecommon metal-working processes employed in the creation and shaping of metal sheets.
Advantages of stamping/punching
- cost effective
- high speed
- precision
- reduces the use of multiple machines, the number of workers, as well as labour time which as a result significantly reduces production costs.
Disadvantages of stamping/punching
- time consuming
- limited to standard size and shapes and tools are expensive.
What is metal pressing?
Metal pressing is involves placing flat sheet metal, in either coil or blank form, into a stamping press.
Advantages of metal pressing
produces highly precise shapes through stamping, resulting in a uniform design throughout
Disadvantages of metal pressing
- time consuming, someone has to be on the machine
- can be expensive.
Examples: brackets, hinges.
What is a CONVENTIONAL METAL CUTTING LATHE?
Is suitable for turning internal and external cylindrical, conical and swing surfaces as well as various metric, inch, module and diametric pitch threads.
The conventional metal cutting lathe is a machine that rotates a cylindrical object against a tool that the individual controls. The general operation is turning, facing, threading and grooving.
Advantages of CONVENTIONAL METAL CUTTING LATHE
- versatility
- precision and ability to perform a wide range of operations such as turning
- facing
- threading
- drilling
Disadvantages of CONVENTIONAL METAL CUTTING LATHE
- risk of injury if not used properly
- high initial cost
- need for regular maintenance.
What is a CNC METAL CUTTING LATHE?
A CNC metal lathe is a machine designed to rotate a metal workpiece on a central spindle. This allows an accurate cutting tool to be used on the inside or outside of the workpiece
The primary CNC lathe machine operations are: Cutting involves separating large amounts of material from a workpiece with a sharp-edged cutting tool. Deformation involves physically changing the shape of a workpiece by removing material from it.
Advantages of CNC METAL CUTTING LATHE?
- produce little to no waste
- fast and efficient
- no need for highly skilled people.
Disadvantages of CNC METAL CUTTING LATHE?
- highly expensive
- can break down and lead to high costs and need lots of maintenance and repairs.
