Dual Diagnosis
Describes the condition of mental patients who are also addicted to mind altering drugs.
Denial
A defense mechanism, operating unconsciously, used to resolve emotional conflict and allay anxiety by disavowing thoughts, feelings, wishes, needs, or external reality factors that are consciously intolerable.
Delirium Tremens
Acute delirium associated with prolonged alcoholism; characterized by clouding of consciousness, intense anxiety, tremors, and hallucinations.
Delusion
A false belief firmly held despite obviously is proof or evidence to the contrary. Further, the belief is not one ordinarily accepted by other members of the person’s culture of subculture.
Dementia
An organic mental disorder in which there is a deterioration of previously acquired intellectual abilities of sufficient severity to interfere with social and occupational functioning. Memory disturbance is the most prominent symptom. There is also impairment in abstract thinking, judgment, impulse control, and/or personality change.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
A pattern of birth defects seen in some babies of alcohol abusing mothers.
Displacement
A defense mechanism in which a repressed emotion is transferred from one subject to another.
