Q

amoebas are single-celled organisms, and their nutrition primarily involves engulfing and absorbing food particles. they feed on small organisms like bacteria and algae. outline the process that amoeba would use to gain their nutrients [3].

A

phagocytosis. this means that:
1. amoeba engulfs food particles/bacteria and algae, forming a FOOD VACUOLE [1].
2. FOOD VACUOLE FUSES WITH LYSOSOME [1].
3. solids/food particles are destroyed by DIGESTIVE ENZYMES IN LYSOSOME [1].

Q

a group of students decided to investigate the effect of temperature on the rate of osmosis using red cabbage leaves. outline a controlled experiment investigating the effects of temperature on the rate of osmosis using red cabbage leaves [5].

A
  1. there will be two groups: an experimental group and a control group.
  2. in the experimental group, temperature will be changed by immersing test tubes in water baths at 0C, 20C, 40C, 60C and 80C.
  3. add 30mL of water to a boiling tube.
  4. add the boiling tube to the 0C water bath.
  5. add a 5g piece of red cabbage into the boiling tube.
  6. the membrane permeability will be measured by absorbance of light in the surrounding liquid, measured by a colorimeter after 30 mins.
  7. all other variables will be kept the same, such as the species of cabbage and volume of water.
  8. repeat the above for other temperatures.
  9. for the control group, repeat the above but with no cabbage.
  10. repeat the experiment many times.
  11. if (IV) … then (DV).

Q

what is the function of the mitochondria in an antibody secreting a plasma cell? [1]

A

aerobic cellular respiration. this means that it provides energy/ATP for antibody production and secretion.

Q

describe how chloroplasts came to be a double membrane bound organelle [2].

A

theory of endosymbiosis [1]. this means that the larger prokaryotic cell engulfed the smaller prokaryotic cell [1].
