Q

How do you answer this question regarding project termination and modern slavery?

A
  1. List the positives and negatives of project termination to show general understanding
  2. The project should continue
  3. Why?
    * Following 3 years of work, the cost of terminating the project is very high for investors.
    * Cancelling the project also admits to the public that my businesses was responsible for the modern slavery on site, which it was not.
    * At the same time, my company has made a mistake in not identifying that the specialised sub-contractor was using modern slaves in their workforce and not maintaining a safe site. This is unacceptable, and requires an apology to the press, the public, and environmental groups.
    * Victims familes should be reached out to directly with apologies for company failures in not identifying the wrongdoing of the subcontractor, issuing generous subsidy packages.
    * The communications to the press should ensure that the subcontractor takes full blame for hiring modern slaves, however we accept responsibility and should be deeply apologetic for not reconising these issues.

Why do people hesitate to terminate projects and why is this angle wrong?

A
  • We always think about sunk costs
  • However, it is always lower cost to terminate a project now than in the future
