prokaryotes and eukaryotes Flashcards
(8 cards)
Archaea
Single cells, no nucleus, evolutionary closer to eukaryotes than to bacteria.
Eukarya
Eukaryotic cells (with a nucleus). Includes single-celled and multi-celled species of protists, plants, fungi, and animals
Bacteria
Single cells, no nucleus.
Prokaryotes
Bacteria: most diverse and well-known group of single-celled organisms that lack a nucleus
Archaea: group of single-celled organisms that lack a nucleus but are more closely related to eukaryotes than to bacteria
Eukaryotes
Protist: Diverse group of simple eukaryotes; varies consumers or producers
Fungi: Single-celled or multi-celled eukaryotic consumer
Breaks down material outside itself, then absorbs nutrients released from the breakdown; decomposed
Plants: Multi-celled, typically photosynthetic producer
Animals: Multi-celled consumer that develops through a series of stages and moves about during part or all of its life
Cell theory
- All living things are made of cells
- Cells are the basic unit of life.
- All cells come from other cells.
Prokaryotic
No nucleus, no membrane bound organelles, divides with binary fission, unicellular organisms, cell walls made of peptidoglycan, ex: bacteria, archaea
Eukaryotic
Has nucleus, has membrane bound organelles, divides using mitosis, uni or multi-cellular organisms, cell walls are only fungi and plants made of chitin of cellulose
