{Prokcell}Ribosomes and Inclusion Bodies Flashcards
(11 cards)
Where are ribosomes located in prokaryotes?
Ribosomes are associated with the plasma membrane of the cell.
What is the size of prokaryotic ribosomes?
They are about 15 nm by 20 nm in size.
What are the subunits that make up prokaryotic ribosomes?
Prokaryotic ribosomes are made of two subunits - 50S and 30S.
What do the 50S and 30S subunits form when present together?
They form 70S prokaryotic ribosomes.
What is the function of ribosomes?
Ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis.
What is a polyribosome or polysome?
Several ribosomes may attach to a single mRNA and form a chain called polyribosomes or polysome.
What do ribosomes of a polysome do?
They translate the mRNA into proteins.
What are inclusion bodies?
Reserve material in prokaryotic cells stored in the cytoplasm in the form of inclusion bodies.
Are inclusion bodies bound by membranes?
No, inclusion bodies are not bound by any membrane system and lie free in the cytoplasm.
What are examples of inclusion bodies?
Examples include phosphate granules, cyanophycean granules, and glycogen granules.
Where are gas vacuoles found?
Gas vacuoles are found in blue green and purple and green photosynthetic bacteria.
