What are propaganda techniques?
Methods used to spread ideas that further a cause
What does propaganda manipulate?
Propaganda appeals to emotion not intellect
Why is propaganda used?
To manipulate the viewers’ reason and emotions
To persuade you to believe in something or someone
To buy an item
To make you vote a certain way
To twist or distort the truth
What are the ten types of propaganda?

What does bandwagon propaganda do?
Appeals to the conformist side of everyone
‘Everyone is doing it’
‘Join the crowd’
Everyone is supporting the idea or cause, so you should too
No one wants to be left out
What is testimonial propaganda?
Celebrity endorsement i.e. This person does/uses/supports this, you should too
Why is testimonial propaganda effective?
Celebrities appeal to everyone because of their popularity and supposed credibility
What does the use of fear in propaganda do?
It presents a dreaded circumstance
Presents a specific type of behaviour to avoid the event
What are logical fallacies?
The use of facts
Only portions of the fact are used
The facts may be true, but the conclusions drawn from the facts are not i.e. Faulty cause and effect, the conclusion does not follow
Circular reasoning is used
What are glittering generalities?
A generally accepted virtue is employed
Often the words used have an unclear meaning i.e. Good, honest, fair, best
What is the plain folk method of propaganda?
Like a testimonial, except ordinary people support it
Makes the idea seem “approachable”
What is name calling?
When a largely perceived negative image is tied to a person
Rather than supporting their own idea, they will attack the person supporting the other idea
What is a slogan?
Oversimplified statements that imply action or belief with no thinking
What is ad nauseum?
The repetition of a slogan
What is a scapegoat?
Similar to name calling
Blame everything that goes wrong on a single person or group that cannot defend themselves
What is an outright lie?
When facts, documents or the story of what happened is changed

Encourages people to work hard too

Squealer says that if the pigs aren’t given the milk and apples, then Jones will come back

It is also good for other animals, but Squealer only uses half a fact
