Properties of Ionic Lattices Flashcards
1
Q
What is a lattice
A
A lattice is a regular array of particles
2
Q
How are the lattices held together
A
The lattice is held together by the storng electrostatic attractions between postitively and negatively charged ions
3
Q
What are the physical properties of ionic substances/compounds?
A
- High melting and boiling points –> a lot of energy has to be supplied to break the strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositley charges ions
- Crystalline
- Brittle
- Soluble in water
- Insoluble in organic solvents
4
Q
Explain the electrical conductivity of ionic substances/compounds
A
- they don’t conduct electricity when they’re solid because the IONS are in a fixed postion and are not free to move around
- they conduct electricity when they are molten or if they are dissolved in water (in aqueous solution). This happens because the ions then become free to mov around
