properties of solutions Flashcards
(14 cards)
osmosis
a type of diffusion where water moves across a semipermeable membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
cohesion
the tendency of similar molecules to stick to each other or group together.
adhesiveness
a measure of how well dissimilar particles or surfaces cling to one another.
solvent
the substance in which a solute is dissolved to form a solution.
solution
a homogenous mixture of two or more substances whose components are uniformly distributed on a microscopic scale.
exist as gases, liquids, and solids.
solute
the substance that dissolved in a solvent to form a solution
saturated solution
a solution containing the maximum possible amount of solute.
supersaturated solution
a solution that has been raised to a higher temperature in order to dissolve more solute than would be possible at room temperature.
concentration of a solution
the quantity of solute in a given quantity of solution.
dilution
the addition of a solvent to decrease the concentration of solute in a solution.
diffusion
the movement of any substance from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration
passive transport
diffusion that doesn’t require energy
active transport
substances that need the input of energy to move from an area of low concentration to high concentration gradient.
the solubility of most solid and liquid solutes increases with
increase in temperature
