proprioception Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is proprioception
the awareness of the body in space
proprioception examples
knowing where your body is without looking at it
how much force needed to be applied
coordination between body parts
how is sensory information generated
by proprioceptors throughout the body
what are the 3 main types of proprioceptors
muscle spindles
Golgi tendon organs
joint kinaesthetic receptors
how is the mental image of the body created
info from proprioceptors transmit to CNS, where it is processed
brain then creates a mental representation of the body
how do you test proprioception
Romberg test - balance
heel shin test
finger nose test
what is the central nervous system (CNS)
body’s main control centre
processes sensory information and directs responses
what are the main parts in the CNS
spinal cord and brain
what does the CNS do in proprioception
individual receptors send info about proprioception sense to the brain
what is the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
communicates information from body organs, glands and muscles to CNS
communicate info from CNS to organs etc via motor neurons
what are the main parts in the PNS
nerves that run through the head, neck and body
what is alien hand syndrome
person experiencing involuntary movements
sense that a limb is acting by itself
what is phantom limb syndrome
feeling sensations in an amputated limb
feeling things when the body part isnt there
