week 1 Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is sensation
the process of sensory organs taking in different stimuli from the world
what is perception
how the brain organises and interprets the stimuli based on memory, experiences and expectations
what is bottom up processing and what does it rely on
relies on sensation, it takes sensory information and pieces it together to create an image
what is top down processing and what does it rely on
relies on perception, it uses memory, prior knowledge and expectations to interpret information
bottom up processing example
unscrambling words
what is absolute threshold
minimum amount of stimulation to detect a stimulus 50% of the time
what is just noticeable difference
minimum amount of difference between two stimuli that can be detected
what is an example of just noticeable difference
finding a different shade of colour in similar shades
what is the weber fechner law
how we notice changes in stimulus intensity
what is an example of weber fechner law
adding 5g of chips to a bag, perception of same amount of chips but increased by 5g
