A

a branch of dentistry that focuses on the replacement of the missing teeth and associated soft and hard tissues, by the use of prostheses such as crowns, bridges, dentures and implants

what is the purpose of a primary impression?

A
  • taken with stock trays
  • used to capture anatomical details of edentulous and partially edentulous arch
  • used as a basis for diagnosis and treatment planning
  • working replica of the patient’s oral structures
  • allow us to fabricate a custom tray

what is the purpose of a secondary impression?

A
  • primary impressions use alginate and stock trays which often do not fit the pt accurately
  • alginate doesn’t capture fine details
  • custom trays are fabricated and usually used with silicone impression material to create a highly accurate impression
  • can be made by conventional or digital means with diff materials

what are the key differences in material, accuracy, time and cost between conventional and digital custom trays?

A

Conventional:
- light cured acrylic resin
- required careful handling and finishing to maintain accuracy
- more labour intensive
- lower cost
Digital:
- 3D printed resin
- high accuracy
- automated process, but printing can take a long time
- higher cost
