Protection of the CNS Flashcards
(9 cards)
Meninges Components
Dura Mater, Subdural Space, Arachnoid Mater, Subarachnoid Space, Pia Mater
Both Brain + Spinal Cord
Dura Mater - Meninges
2 Layers
- Periosteal layer (closer to skull)
- Meningeal Layer (closer to brain)
Tough, Outermost Layer
Subdural Space - Meninges
A tiny space filled with blood vessels
Between Dura Mater and Arachnoid Mater
- Location of a subdural haemorrhage
Arachnoid Mater - Meninges
Delicate web-like membrane
- Allows CSF to drain
Subarachnoid Space - Meninges
Filled with CSF, acting as a cushioning device for brain + spinal cord
Pia Mater - Meninges
A thin film that clings to the brain
Is avascular, and supplies some blood flow to the brain
Helps Maintain Shape
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
Purpose + Functions
A clear fluid surrounding the Brain + Spinal Cord
Buoyancy
- Reduces brain weight, and
therefore the potential crushing
of inferior brain tissue
Shock Absorption
Nourishment + Waste Removal
Blood/Brain Barrier
Formed by Glial Cells
- Astrocytes
- Encourages endothelial cells to
form junctions
Selectively Permeable
Provides Stable Environment
Blood Supply
Circle of Willis
Provides and alternate way to receive blood to the brain, should there be a blockage or injury of some description
