Proteins Flashcards

1
Q
Cooperative binding of Oxygen by hemoglobin?
A
- it loads Oxygen in the lungs and unloads it in tissues where it is needed
2
Q
Role of 2,3-bisphosphatglycerate in the function of hemoglobin
A
- it reduces the affinity of hemoglobin to Oxygen
- enhances the unloading of oxygen in the tissues in hypoxic conditions
3
Q
Difference between fetal and maternal hemoglobin
A
- fetal hemoglobin has lower affinity to 2,3BPG than maternal hemoglobin
-> fetal hem. binds oxygen more tightly
4
Q
Bohr effect
A
- decrease in pH reduces hemoglobins affinity for oxygen, making unloading of oxygen in tissues easier
5
Q
Carbon Monoxide compared to oxygen
A
- CM Binds to hemoglobin at oxigen binding Site 200 times more tightly
- binds to only 1 out of 4 oxygen binding Sites and prevents the hemoglobin from releasing oxygen
6
Q
Sickle cell disease
A
- some ß-globin chains have a mutation
- a change from Glutamat to Valin
- hemoglobin gets polymerased
- veins can get clocked -> ischamia
