Protist plant Vocab Flashcards
(23 cards)
Protist
An organism that belongs to the Protista kingdom
Heterotroph
An organism that gets food eating other organisms or their byproducts and that cannot make organic compounds from inorganic materials
Eukaryote
A eukaryote is any organism whose cells have a cell nucleus
Decomposer
An organisms that decomposes dead things, bones an other things
Parasite
an organism that lives in or on another organism its host and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host’s expense.
Host
An organism from which a parasite takes food or shelter.
Fungi
A fungus is any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds
Spore
A small usually single-celled asexual or sexual reproductive body that is highly resistant to desiccation and heat and is capable of growing into a new organism, produced especially by certain bacteria, fungi, algae, and nonflowering plants.
Lichen
Lichenized fungus
Non Vascular plant
nonvascular plants absorb water and minerals directly through their leaflike scales.
Vasularplants
They get water through photosynthesis
Angiosperm
the plants with the most complex reproductive system
Photosynthesis
The cycle vascular plants use to get nutrients
Gymnosperm
seed-bearing vascular plants, such as cycads, ginkgo, yews and conifers, in which the ovules or seeds are not enclosed in an ovary
Cellular respiration
The chemical process that generates most of the energy in the cell, supplying molecules needed to make the metabolic reactions
Transpiration
process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere
Tropism
a growth in response to a stimulus
Gravitropism
a turning or growth movement by a plant or fungus in response to gravity
Asexual Reproduction
is a type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism, and inherit the genes of that parent only; it does not involve the fusion of gametes, and almost never changes the number of chromosomes
Phototropism
is the growth of an organism which responds to a light stimulus
Toxoplasmosis
How a cat parasite exploits immune cells to reach the brain
Malaria
is an infectious disease that is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions.
Giardia
Intestinal infection
