Protista Flashcards
(20 cards)
What level of classification are protists?
A kingdom.
What two subcategories can they be divided into?
- Animal-like protista
- Plant-like protista
What are plant-like protista also commonly known as?
Algae.
Characteristics of Algae?
- aquatic
- contain chlorophyll
- autotrophic
- release large amounts of oxygen during photosynthesis
- mostly free-floating
- unicellular OR multicellular
What is the function of chlorophyll in algae?
It enables algae to make their own food.
What are the five groups that Algae is grouped into based off of features?
- green algae
- brown algae
- red algae
- diatoms
- dinoflagellates
What are diatoms?
Microscopic, unicellular algae whose cell walls contain silica.
What are dinoflagellates?
Microscopic, unicellular algae with flagella that are found in surface waters.
What are animal-like protists also known as?
Protozoans.
Characteristics of protozoans?
- unicellular
- heterotrophs
- swim around looking for food
How do amoeba ingest their food?
They ingest it via phagocytosis for intracellular digestion.
How do plasmodium ingest their food?
They absorb nutrients directly through the cell membrane.
What are the four groups that protozoans can be divided into?
- amoeboids
- ciliates
- flagellates
- parasitic
What are amoeboids?
Protozoans that move and feed by means of temporary cytoplasmic projections called pseudopodia.
What are ciliates?
Protozoans that use cilia to swim and capture food.
What are flagellates?
Protozoans that use the flagella for locomotion.
What are parasites?
or parasitic protozoans?
Non-motile protozoans.
What is plankton?
THe numerous micro-organisms floating in currents of the open oceans.
What two groups are plankton divided into?
- Phytoplankton
- Zooplankton
