Protists (18) Flashcards
(12 cards)
Phylogenetics
The study of the evolutionary history of organisms and their ancestors
Monophyletic
A group of organisms all descending from a common ancestor (clade)
Polyphyletic
A group of organisms that don’t have a recent common ancestor
Paraphyletic
A group of organisms descended from a common ancestor but doesn’t include all common descendants
Protists
The most diverse group of eukaryotes
- Classified by supergroups and clades
Protist Taxonomy: supergroups and clades
Currently four main supergroups that house all 7 main clades including:
1. Excavata
2. SAR
3. Unikonta
4. Archaeplastida
Autotroph
Protist Diversity
- contain chloroplasts and can synthesize their own food through photosynthesis (example: algae)
Heterotroph
Protist Diversity
Consume other organisms
- Protozoans: get their food through phagocytosis
- Slime molds: get their food through absorption
Mixotrophs
Protist Diversity
Obtain nutrition through both photosynthesis and through consumption of other organisms
Environments inhabited by protists
Freshwater
Saltwater
Parasitic species
Reproductive strategies of protists
Sexual and asexual
