Protists and archaea 2 Flashcards
memorise and learn (6 cards)
What are the key ideas
- All protists are eukaryotes
- nucleus and membrane-bound organelles
- single-celled
- have a well-developed cytoskeleton
What is endosymbiosis
- one organism living in another
- The relationship between aerobic protists created the mitochondria
- The relationship with photosynthetic protists resulted in the chloroplasts
What are the qualities of symbiotic protists
- Wood digestive protists help break down the wood so termites can gain energy from the indigestible cellulose
What is the structure and function of a fungi in an ecosystem
- multicellular fungi extend filaments called hyphae (basically their roots)
- Spores enable the fungi to colonise their surroundings, and spores germinate and grow when conditions are favourable
- Hyphe secretes enzymes into its surroundings to break down dead matter, releasing nutrients
- Hyphe absorbs these nutrients
- makes fungi good decomposers
Nucleomorphs?
- functional verstil nuclei
What are the 2 types of hyphe
septate and coenoyctic
