What is mental health?
Emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing that affects how we think, feel, and act. Affects stress response and resilience.
What is mental illness?
Health conditions that significantly affect a person’s wellbeing, thinking, feeling, mood, behavior, daily life… E.g, depression, anxiety
What does PERMA stand for?
Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement.
What is the purpose of the PERMA model?
Part of positive psychology. The theory of wellbeing and happiness. 5 key elements that help people flourish.
What are 3 common interventions in positive psychology?
Mindfulness, Meditation, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
What is mindfulness?
Paying attention to present moment, being purposeful without judgement. Helps to regulate emotions.
What is meditation?
Practice that focuses on the mind using breath, sound, or mantra. Lowers cortisol (stress), improves sleep.
What is CBT?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, therapy to help people change negative thoughts and feelings into positive ones.
What is human flourishing?
Living a fulfilling, meaningful, and connected life.
What are the 4 response styles?
Active constructive - Best for building relationships
Passive constructive - Quiet support, may come off as unenthusiastic
Active deconstructive - Harmful and critical
Passive deconstructive - Uninterested, ignorant
