Science Inquiry Skills Flashcards
(17 cards)
Independent variable
The variable the experimenter changes or manipulates to determine the effect on the DV
Dependent variable
The variable that is impacted by change in the independent variable
Constant Variable
Stays the same, controlled.
Extraneous variable
Any variable other than the IV or DV that can change the results
What data is numerical and not directly verified? Give an example.
Quantitative subjective
What data is numerical and directly verified? Give an example.
Quantitative objective
What data is non-numerical and not directly verified? Give an example.
Qualitative
What measures of central tendency can be used for data analysis?
Mean, Median
What measures of data spread can be used for data analysis?
Standard deviation, Range
What are the 6 ethical considerations?
Informed consent, Voluntary participation, Confidentiality, Right to withdraw, Debriefing, Protection from harm
What research design has a highly rigorous method, randomly assigns groups, and collects all data types?
Experimental design
What research design assigns participants based off pre-existing characteristics?
Quantitative observational design
What research design does not have an IV, DV, or hypothesis?
Qualitative design
What are the 5 evaluation tools?
Internal/External validity, Reliability, Sample size/representativeness
What is internal validity?
Describes is data collection methods are collecting the data they should in relation to the topic
What is external validity?
Describes the extent to which the results can be generalised/applied to other populations, settings, and situations beyond the study environment
What is reliability?
Consistency across trials
