multidimensional theory

A

theory of anxiety and self confidence. there are two types of anxiety, somatic and cognitive. cognitive has a negative linear relationship meaning as it increases, performance decreases. however some somatic is good with the inverted U relationship. too much somatic will decrease performance.

A

increases in arousal causes an increase in perfomance, up to an optimal point. at the optimal point, the performer will have maximal level in performance. if beyond, the performance decreases.

catastrophe

A

if the arousal becomes too high for the performer to cope with, the performance all come falling down represented by the catastrophe theory. this can be caused by anxiety and nervousness or self doubt. performance can be uncoordinated leading to loss of relaxation.

the zone of optimal functioning is related to athletes in their ‘flow state’ which it is proposed requires different levels of arousal for each individual. 3 things will be taken into account and these include the individual, the nature of the sport and the situation.
some characteristics of being in the zone include feeling calm and having complete attentional control.
