what is depression?
a mental disorder characterised by low mood and energy levels

premenstrual dysphoric disorder
major depressive disorder
persistent depressive disorder

what is major depressive disorder?
severe short-term depression
what is persistent depressive disorder?
long term/recurring depression
what is disruptive mood dysregulation disorder?
childhood tempter tantrums
what is premenstrual dysphoric disorder?
disruption to mood prior to and or/during menstruation
what are the 3 behaviour characteristics of depression?
activity levels
disruption to sleep+eating behaviour
aggression and self harm
what happens to an individual’s activity levels when they experience depression?
lower
makes them lethargic which leads to people withdrawing from work, education and their social life
OR
can lead to psychomotor agitation
what is psychomotor agitation?
struggling to relax
what happens to a person’s sleeping patterns and eating patterns when experiencing depression?
reduced sleep (insomnia) or increased need for sleep (hypersomnia)
appetite and eating may increase or decrease leading to weight loss or weight gain
