What is OCD
A
- a condition characterised by obsessions and/or compulsive behaviour

Give an example of a type of ocd
A
- hoarding disorder - compulsive gathering of possessions and the inability to part with anything, regardless of its value

Outline the 2 behavioural characteristics of OCD
A
- compulsions - there are two elements:
Compulsions are repetitive - sufferers feel compelled to repeat behaviours e.g. hand washing
Compulsions reduce anxiety - 10% OCD sufferers experience compulsive behaviours alone - avoidance - sufferers of OCD tend to try and manage their condition by avoiding situations that trigger anxiety

Outline the 3 emotional characteristics of OCD
A
- anxiety and distress - obsesses I’ve thoughts are unpleasant and frightening + the anxiety to repeat a behaviour (compulsion) creates anxiety
- accompanying depression - low mood/lack of energy
- guilt and disgust - can experience guilt over minor moral issues/ disgust at the self or something external

Outline the 3 cognitive characteristics of OCD
A
- obsessive thoughts - 90% sufferers experience this, these are always unpleasant but vary between people
- cognitive strategies to deal with obsessions - e.g. a religious person may deal with guilt by obsessive prayer
- insight int excessive anxiety - sufferers are aware their obsessions/compulsions are excessive
