psycology vocab #1 Flashcards
(11 cards)
Neuron
nerve cells that send messages all over your body to allow you to do everything from breathing to talking, eating, walking, and thinking
Cell body
contains the nucleus; cells life support center
Dendrites
receives messages
Axon
passas messages from body cells to other neurons
Myelin sheath
covers the axon of some neurons; helps speed neural impulses
Glial cells
support, nourish, and protect neurons; effect learning, thinking, and memory
Action potential
a breif electrical charge the travels down the axon. it sends messages by firing an impulse
Threshold
the value at which a neuron will fire, or activate, based on the input it receives
Refractory period
the recovery time that a neuron needs between action potentials
All-or-none response
the strength of a response of a nerve cell or muscle fiber is not dependent upon the strength of the stimulus
Synapse
the meeting between neurons
