Q

What is the code word for:
Firearms Investigations

Regarding bullets striking glass and the resulting fractures

A
  1. When the bullet strikes the glass, “Radial fractures” (the somewhat straight lines running out from the hole) form 1st, but on the side opposite the entry.
  2. Concentric fractures” (the circular cracks in the glass) form on the same side the bullet entered, but form after the radial fractures.
  3. FLAKES” of chipped and broken glass will be blown away as the bullet passes through the glass.
  4. A “crater” is formed on the side opposite the point of entry.

As the bullet strikes it causes the following:
* Concentric fractures on the side of entry.
* Radial fractures on the exit side (but these form first).
* Flaking on the side opposite the entry.

C-O-R-1-n = F-L-A-K-E-S

Has appeared with some frequency
Example Question: At the scene of a shooting you are looking at a window. There is a radial fracture on the outside of the window and there is flaking. Which way was the bullet shot, outside in or inside out.
Answer: Inside out based on the information above (glass flakes will always be on the side the bullet exited)
