(11 cards)
what is personal hygiene
Personal hygiene is how we look after our bodies. Keeping
ourselves clean and tidy makes us feel better about ourselves and
also keeps us, and those around us, healthier!
what does personal hygiene include
brushing teeth;
washing hands;
wearing clean clothes;
showering or bathing regularly;
keeping fresh and clean.
what is puberty
Puberty is the time in your life, usually between the age of 9 and 16, when your body begins to change, grow and develop as you
become an adult.
what happens during puberty
Your body will begin to change on the outside and inside. Your
feelings and emotions can change and feel stronger.
what are hormones
During puberty, your body releases special chemicals called hormones from the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is located at the bottom of your brain
These hormones go to work on different parts of your body.
The hormones in your body that cause changes to occur during
puberty can impact on your personal hygiene.
what are some changes that occur during puberty
sweat (you sweat more), skin (becomes more oily and can cause spots to form on the face and parts of the body), hair (becomes more oily and greasy)
sweat and body odour
change in hormores during puberty causes the body to produce more sweat
sweat doesn’t smell until it becomes stale and bacteria begins to grow –> known as BO body odour
to reduce body odour –> shower and bathe more regularly, using ani-perspirant deodorant
spots during puberty
during puberty skin produces more oil –> oily skin can cause spots –> everyone’s skin is different so some people will get more spots and they can appear anywhere on the body
to help you can: wash your face regularly with a gentle soap or facial cleanser but not too often
creams and face products like makeup can block your pores, so you should wash them before going to bed
avoid squeezing spots as they can become dirty and infected, it can also cause scarring
you can also get some creams for spot treatment and ask a pharmacist
hair during puberty
glands in the scalp produce more oil, causing your hair to look more shiny, oily or greasy
you can wash regularly with shampoo and if you want add conditioner
private parts during puberty
they can sweat more so keep these places clean
change your underwear daily
tips for good hygiene
Wash your hands to prevent the spread of germs.
Shower or bathe frequently to remove sweat, making sure to clean your
private parts.
Wash your face twice a day.
Don’t squeeze any spots.
Wash your hair when it begins to feel oily.
Wear clean clothes and change underwear daily.
Wash off any creams, make-up or hair products before you go to bed.
Speak to someone you trust if you have concerns.
It is important to remember that puberty affects people differently and at
different times. Never make fun of someone because of how they might
look or smell.
