Transdermal patch

- duration will vary
Applying a transdermal patch
- always remove old patch before applying new one
- document patch placement and removal
- place date and initial on patch
- cleanse area of skin before application;rotates sites
sublingual and buccal
Do not crush, swallow or drink until dissolved
Suppository/Enemas rectal
- Position client on left side
- Use gloves and lubricants
- Encourage client to stay in position for 15-40 minutes
- enema -encourage to hold for at lest 10 minutes
Vaginal suppository/enema
1- position in frog like position
2-encourage client to remain in bed for at least 15-30 minutes
Do not for suppositories
Local effect
Application to specific body part, takes action in that part, a defined area
Ex: Bactrobam applied to an infected toe
Systemic effect
Medication circulating in the blood stream, affecting all areas of the body
Ex: Bactria given orally to treat a urinary tract infection, bronchitis, or ear infection
