Qualitative Data Processing Flashcards

1
Q

Meta Data Log (Involves: 5)

A

Research administrative task to keep track of research activities.
Helps to preserve confidentiality.
Involves:
Title of project
Place and date of data collection
Names of data collectors
Code names of participants
Method and format of data collection

Q

Coding

A

Identify important issues/concepts in data that are relevant to the research question and assign a phrase to summarize.
Smallest unit of text that represents the data.
Related codes are combined to form themes.

Q

What to code

A

It caught your attention
Seen in a published journal/article
Occurred frequently in the data
Relevant and important to the research question
Appears relevant and important to the participant

Q

Coding Strategies (2)

A

Deductive coding: codes exist before data. Code book/scheme. Enough current literature on the topic.
Inductive coding: data exists before codes. Little or no knowledge on topic. Codes evolve through the coding process.

Q

Other things to consider for Coding (3)

A

Iteration (coding over and over again to develop the codes as the analysis progresses).
Reflection (keep a log of procedures accounting for thoughts and feelings).
Triangulation (Linking raw data with codes and documentation of reflection. Even better with multiple coders).

Q

Data Saturation - Reasons to stop data collection/analysis (3)

A

No new codes are being generated (during iterative coding) -> stop coding.
New data is similar or identical to data already collected (iterative data collection) -> Stop data collection.
In grounded theory research, all elements of the theory are represented in data already collected and analyzed (during theoretical sampling) -> stop theoretical sampling and data collection.

Q

Theoretical Sampling

A

Collect appropriate data to explain the theory.
The theory generated in one iteration of data collection is used to determine the next type of data to collect.
