Q

List and describe 5 QOL indicators. Explain how they impact QOL

A

1.Access to education-percent of people who have access to education. Access to education impacts QOL because you need and education to read, write and do everyday things. Also if you have and education you can get better jobs which can mean more money, some jobs don’t except employees without and education.
2. Access to healthcare- percent of people who have access to healthcare. Access to healthcare impacts QOL because it is important to have healthcare available to you if something bad happens. People would need access to healthcare if they had medical issues and if they didn’t have access they could get very sick or die.
3. Access to clean water- percent of people who have access to a good amount of safe water. Access to clean water impacts QOL because everybody needs to use clean water in many different ways. For example you use water to gather, drinks, cook and clean. If you drink or bathe in dirty water it won’t be healthy.
4. Literacy rate- percent of the population that can read and write a sentence or did basic math. Literacy rate impacts QOL because in most jobs you need to have the ability to read, write or do math. Some jobs wouldn’t accept people who can’t do these things.
5. Poverty rate- percent of people who live in poverty. Poverty rate impacts QOL because the government should know how many people are living in poverty so they can do something about it.

Q

Know the scenario from the Bangladesh tannery. Be able to make connections between the scenario and the QOL indicators

A

The leather tanneries are one of Bangladesh’s major sources of economic development. More than 15,000 people work in the Dhaka tanneries, some at even 11 years old. Around 4.7 million children work, and school is limited. The work is very toxic and once the leather is processed, the toxic waste is dumped into the river that runs through the city. The water has no life in it but a lot of people have no choice but to use it for bathing, preparing food, and washing clothes. Most tannery workers are likely to die before 50.
1. Since schooling is limited it would connect to access to education
2. Because of the lack of school they may not know how to read or write impacting literacy rate
3. They are using dirty water so it connects to access to clean water
4. They seem to be in poverty because they aren’t meeting basic needs connecting to poverty rate
5. Since people have a specific age before they die it connects to life expectancy.

A

The primary sector is probably seen more in less developed countries because they may depend on their natural resources. Q

What is trade? Why do countries trade? What is fair trade and how does it improve people’s QOL?

A

Trade is the exchange of goods or services, sometimes for money. Countries trade because they might have a lot of one resource but need a different one that another country has a lot of, so it is a win win for both, trading is giving the economy more globilization. Fair trade is trade between companies and producers in developing countries and fair prices are paid to the producers. Fair trade improves QOL because fair prices are paid to produces, meaning more money for them, which could improve their QOL.
