Definition of Stress
The imbalance between demand and response capability where failure to meet the demand has important consequences.
Definition of Anxiety
Anxiety is a negative emotional state with feelings of nervousness, worry, and apprehension associated with activation or arousal of the body.
Definition of Arousal
The blend of physiological activity in a person, and it refers to the intensity dimensions of motivation at a particular moment.
Explain Stress
Eustress is a good form of stress which helps athletes to perform and helps them to increase both skill and focus attention on aspects of their sport. Distress is a bad form of stress which is an extreme form of anxiety, nervousness or worry related to their performance. it is the result of a perceived inability to meet the demands of the environment.
Explain Anxiety
State anxiety is a temporary, everchanging emotional state of subjective, consciously perceived feelings of apprehension and tension, associated with activation of the autonomous nervous system. Trait anxiety is relatively enduring disposition to feel stress, worry and discomfort. Cognitive anxiety is negative thoughts and self doubt about performance manifest themselves in the participant.
Explain Arousal
The right level of arousal is key to success in sport. We call this the right level / optimal Arousal. It is the level of arousal most suited for best performance.
Stress’ impact on performance
Eustress - Improves performance, increases intrinsic motivation, focuses an athletes attention on their sport
Distress - Extreme anxiety, worry, apprehension or nervousness, athletes believe they cant meet the demands of the sport or situation.
Anxiety’s impact on performance
Negative thoughts and self doubt, relatively enduring disposition to feel stress, worry and discomfort.
Arousal’s impact on performance
Changes in attentional focus, Increase in stress anxiety, experience of flow states
