Question 11 and 12 Flashcards
(42 cards)
What are topics that can be discussed in these questions
• Lighting set up – daylight (ambient light)/ artificial light source/angle of light
• Lighting technique – low key, high key, soft light, hard light/backlighting
• Tonal range/editing/enhancing a photograph
• Framing/space
• Viewpoint/scale
• Orientation of camera (portrait/landscape)
• Lens used (standard, macro, telephoto, wide angle)
• Subject matter/mood atmosphere
• Pose/personalities
• Location/decor/clothing
• Composition Rules – leading lines/focal point/rule of thirds
• Exposure Triangle - Shutter speed/ISO/aperture
• Visual elements – colour, pattern, tone, line, shape, form, texture
How does aperture impact a photograph
A small aperture (deep depth of field) means that all of the image is in focus (good
for landscapes).
A wide aperture (shallow depth of field) means the background is blurred so that
the objects at the front usually stand out.
A small aperture lets in less light whereas a wide aperture lets in more light
How does shutter speed impact on a photograph
Fast shutter speed – to capture a freeze frame image
Slow shutter speed – to capture motion blur
A fast shutter speed lets in less light whereas a slow shutter speed lets in more light.
A slow shutter speed risks more camera shake.
How does ISO impact a photo
A low ISO – 100/200 would be used for a sunny day with good lighting conditions
A standard ISO of 400 would be used on a cloudy day
A high ISO would be used in poor lighting conditions, but you would risk ‘noise’ in
the photograph, reducing the quality of the image
What are the visual elements
Colour, tone, pattern, texture, line, form, shape
How does colour impact a photo
What types of colours have been used and how does this impact the image? Complementary colours, warm and cold colours, harmonising colours, limited colour palette
How does tone impact a photo
Is there a wide tonal range created by harsh lighting? Discuss highlights/shadows, dark areas contrasting with light areas
How does pattern impact a photo
Use of repeat pattern, natural patterns, organic and geometric patterns, how pattern adds in area of detail against negative space
How does texture impact a photo
How does the lighting impact how the texture stands out? Texture of the face, texture on the clothing, in the landscape
How does line impact a photo
Leading lines used to draw in your eye, linear structures of buildings, natural lines, organic/geometric lines, thick lines, does harsh lighting make lines stand out and define areas?
How does form impact a photo
The 3d form of objects, this could be emphasised by the amount of light/direction of light or shadows. For example a sphere, cube etc
How does shape impact a photo
Geometric shapes, organic shapes, areas full of shapes next to negative space. Contrasting shapes
What equipment can be used when taking a photo
Tripod, flash gun, shutter release, macro lens, telephoto lens, standard lens, wide angle lens, polarising filter, lens hood, neutral density filter, reflector, soft box
What impact does a tripod have on a photo
stability, avoids camera shake – especially useful for when you are using a slow shutter speed/have poor lighting conditions
How does a flash gun impact a photo
Helps to control the amount of light, angle of light
How does a shutter release impact a photo
Shutter remote avoids camera shake because you don’t have to press the shutter release button – useful for when you are using a slow shutter speed/low lighting conditions
How do different lenses impact a photo
Different lenses effect the point of view of the image
Standard lens – human eye view
Telephoto lens captures detail in the distance
How does polarising filter impact a photo
Used to darken skies, manage reflections, or to suppress glare from the surface of lakes or the sea.
How does a lens hood impact a photo
Is used to block the sun or other direct light sources, to prevent glare and lens flare
How does a neutral density filter impact a photo
Causes overall dimming without changing the colour. This is useful for when the lighting conditions are too bright but would not be useful in low lighting
How does a reflector impact a photo
Is used to bounce light in a certain direction, used in portrait photography.
How does a soft box impact a photo
Soft boxes are commonly used in photography as a soft source of light that minimizes harsh shadows. Use in portrait photography to diffuse light.
What effect does foreground middle ground and background have on a photo
describe the object in the foreground and how this creates depth and add to perspective
How does framing impact a photo
Used to draw your eye into a point of interest, could be a natural frame like an archway drawing in the eye.
