Q

How do you read a histogram

A

To the left - Underexposed
To the right- Overexposed
In the middle- Neutral photo

Q

What are RAW photos

A

uncompressed file format, large file size, has to be post processed to get best results, preserves most amount of information about the image

Q

What are JPEG photos

A

Standard file format, process by camera so can be viewed immediately, smaller file size, compressed to information may be lost, smaller loss in quality over time

Q

What is tungsten lighting?

A

Adds cool tones to balance indoor colours, image may look blue if used in other settings

Q

What is fluorescent lighting?

A

Used under fluorescent lighting, adds warm-red tones to help balance images that may look green

Q

What is daylight lighting?

A

Adds warm tones to image to produce neutral coloured photo, used when shooting in direct sunlight

Q

What is cloudy lighting?

A

Cloudy days cast neutral tones, this adds warmer tones to the image

18
Q

What is shade lighting

A

Designed for open shade, adds warm orange and gives natural looking skin tone

19
Q

What is flash white balance

A

Adds warm tones, prevents skin tones from looking too cold/blue

20
Q

What is sports mode?

A

Camera sets fast shutter speed to freeze action

21
Q

What is portrait mode?

A

Camera sets wide aperture to blur background

22
Q

What is landscape mode

A

Camera sets all exposure triangle values and built in flash is turned off

23
Q

What does diffusing do to a photo?

A

Increases the size of the light source, therefore softening it

24
Q

What does fill in flash do to a photo

A

Helps lighten dark shadows, brighten colours and creates depth

25
What does using a reflector do to a photo?
Used to bounce light back into shadows if a light source is too direct
26
What does a neutral density filter do to a photo?
Allows a photo to be darker so long exposure photos can be taken, like sunglasses, smoother water effect
27
What does panning look like in a photo?
Slow shutter speed combined with camera motion to create a sense of speed around an object. Blurry background + still object.
28
What does tilting do to a photo?
tilting the camera to allow shallow depth of field, creates miniature or stylised effect
29
What is a polarising filter?
A filter placed in front of the camera to darken skies, manage reflections
30
What is high key lighting?
When an image is made up of predominantly light tones, very little shadows
31
What is low key lighting
When an image is predominantly dark tones, mainly shadows, lots of depth and dimension
32
What is hard lighting
Lots of defined shadows, very direct light source eg the sun
33
What is soft lighting
More diffused lights, no hard defined lines
34
What is rim lighting
Illuminating the edge of a subject to create a halo effect
35
What is contre jour lighting
Camera is pointing directly at a light source, silhouette effect
36
What is DPI
Dots Per Inch the higher the DPI number, the more detail in the image
37
What is zooming
Adjusting the focal lens to make a subject appear larger or smaller without moving the camera closer or further away
38
What is colour cast
A tint of a particular colour, usually unwanted, that evenly affects a photograph
39
What is resolution?
The level of detail contained in an image. The higher the resolution and pixel count, the more detail and definition
40
What is auto-bracketing?
Takes multiple shots of the same scene with varying exposure settings. Typically one underexposed, one over exposed and one correctly exposed
41
What is S-curve
Curved lines representing the letter “S” and are used to guide the viewer’s eyes
42
What is bokeh?
Used for street photography to create an effect of blurred colours and out of focus.
43
What is the EV Number
Number that represents a combination of the camera’s shutter speed and F number
