What is a questionaire and what are the types?
They are standardised questions and a self report technique.
Open questions - questions where the participant can express their ideas and opinions openly in a sentence.
Closed - predetermined questions
Likert scale- strength of an agreement
Rating scales- indicates feelings
Fixed choice- where you pick from a range of options
What are the strengths and weaknesses of questionnaires
Strength
- obtain large samples , easily sent, easy to replicate
Weakness
People give socially desirable answers, may have complex questions
What is a structured interview and what are the adv and dis adv
They are verbal questions which are pre determined and asked by the interviewer
What’s a strength of this - they are easy to replicate and interviewer can explain questions which are not understood properly
What’s a limitation- interviews may not be honest , may want to be seen as sociallay desirable
The presence of interviewer can have an impact on how participants respond. - interviewer effect
What is an unstructured interview?
More like a conversation as the questions can have follow up questions, can go in any direction
Adv - more info and understanding.
Weakness- difficult to replicate
Unreliable and not consistent
Difficult to analyse
What are open and close questions
Open -when you answer in whatever way you want
Advantage - free to choose responses
Disadvantage - qualitative data is hard to compare
Closed - where participants are limited in how much they write in response
Advantage - can be easily compared
Disadvantage- limited amount of detail and less valid
What are the important aspects to interview/ questionnaire
- avoid complex question
- reword questions If there difficulty
- no leading questions
-piloting questions - filler questions : builds trust and also can hide real aims of experiment
What is a semi structured interview
A combination of prepared questions with the ability to ask follow up questions
Advantage: easy to compare and rapport is more likely because participant may gain trust due to the interviewer’s interest
Disadvantage: a highly trained interviewer is needed
