They felt that immigrants contributed to problems that existed in the cities.

Increased immigration causes urbanization. Many immigrants found jobs in cities.

Attractions such as department stores, museums, sports
Job opportunities in industry
The movement of farmers looking for jobs in cities as opposed to staying in rural communities

Where were the “new” immigrants primarily from?
Eastern and Southern Europe
Why was it more difficult for the “new” immigrants to assimilate?
More diversity among those populations… different languages, religions, customs, etc.
