Quiz 1 Intro Flashcards
(33 cards)
Primary Prevention
measures to ensure disease does not occur. Ex: fluoride, school education
Secondary Prevention
Treatment of early disease to prevent progression. Ex: removal of biofilm, fluoride for remineralization
Tertiary Prevention
Treatment to replace lost tissues
Initial Lesion
2-4 days, no inflammatory response, no clinical appearance, under the tissue
Early Lesion
7-14 days, increased inflammaotry response, slight rounded or red margins
Established Lesion
Progression from early lesion, formation of pocket epithelium, collagen destruction
Advanced Lesion
connective tissue destruction, alveolar bone destruction
Gingival Pocket
enamel tooth surface pocket wall, no apical migration
Periodontal Pocket
Cementum & enamel tooth surface pocket wall, apical migration
Furcation Type Class I
depression, 0-1 mm, can feel roots
Furcation Type Class II
2-3mm. does not extend to opposite side
Furcation Type Class III
Extends to opposite side
Furcation Class IV
same as III, recession makes clinically visible
Significance of Attached Gingiva
barrier to passage of inflammation, withstands frictional stress of mastication and toothbrushing
Etiologic Factors
acutal cause of the disease, biofilm
Predisposing Factors
person is susceptible to disease, immunocompromised
Contributing Factors
supplements or adds to disease,
Risk Factors
exposure increases the probability that disease will occur
Local Factors
in the immediate environment
Systemic Factors
influenced by general physical or mental disease or condition
Dental Factors
tooth surface irregularities, contour, position, and prostheses
Risk Factors for Periodontal Disease
tobacco/nicotine, diabetes, osteoporosis, psychosocial (stress)
The First Lesson
orientation to biofilm removal, keep it simple, describe the disease process
The Second Lesson
evaluate success, review information, expand knowledge. Always commend and compliment any improvement
