What is physiology?
Involves the study of the functioning of living organisms and their parts.
What is the definition of anatomy?
The study of the structures of an organism and the relationship of the organism to its parts.
It is descriptive.
What is the definition of anatomical position?
It is a reference point used for descriptive purposes. The person is facing the observer, looking forward, and is erect. Palms and feet also forward and arms down to the side.
Biped
An animal that walks on two feet.
Quadruped
An animal that walks on four feet.
Anterior
Towards the front of the body or toward the nose in quadrupeds.
Posterior
Towards the back of the body or the tail in quadrupeds.
Ventral
Towards the belly and is synonymous in bipeds with the anterior position.
Dorsal
Towards the backbone, like posterior position.
Superficial
Towards the surface of the body.
Deep
Away from the surface of the body.
Superior
Above, upper
Inferior
Below or lower
Rostral
Towards the head (beak)
Caudal
Towards the tail (end of spinal cord)
External
Towards the outer surface of the body. Used to describe cavities and walls.
Internal
Towards the inner surface of the body. Describes body cavities and walls.
Medial
Towards the midline.
Lateral
Away from the midline.
Proximal
Towards the body or root of the extremity.
Distal
Away from the root of the body.
Sagittal plane
Vertical cut that divides the body into right and left halves.
Frontal/Coronal plane
Vertical plane that cuts body into front/back halves.
Horizontal plane
Parallel to the floor and divides the body into upper and lower halves.
