Q

What is secondary storage and what is an example of secondary storage?

A

Secondary storage is the type of memory that is designed to hold data for long periods of time, even when there is no power to the computer. The most common type of secondary storage is a disk drive which magnetically encodes data onto a circular disk.

Q

What are two types of external hardware?

A

The two types of external hardware are input and output devices.

17
Q

What is a computer network?

A

A computer network is a set of computer systems that are interconnected and share resources as well as data.

18
Q

What are LAN and WAN networks and what are some key differences between them?

A

An LAN (Local Area Network) is a network that connects all computer systems within a limited geographic area (usually a school or an office) and shares data and resources between devices. A WAN is a network that extends over a larger geographical area and is often less secure than an LAN.

19
Q

What is a client? What is a server?

A

A client is something that receives data or resources over the network. A server is a computer or a program that hosts data and resources to be shared across the network like documents, printers, websites, etc.

20
Q

What is a router and what is a modem? How do we tell the difference between the two?

A

A router is a hardware device that routes data from a Local Area Network (LAN) to another network connection. A cable modem is a hardware device that uses a coax cable to connect your computer devices with your Internet Service Provider. A cable modem connects to the Internet.

21
Q

What does DNS server stand for and what does it do over the internet?

A

A DNS server stands for Domain Name System Server. Since domain names serve as memorizable names over the Internet and computers use IP addresses to access websites, DNS translates domain names into IP addresses, allowing us to access an Internet connection by its domain name.

22
Q

What are firewalls and how are they similar to a real firewall that can be found in buildings?

A

A firewall is a system that controls incoming and outgoing network traffic to determine what data should be allowed through, based on a set of rules. Firewalls are similar to real firewalls because they prevent outsiders or outside data from entering into your own network.

23
Q

What are 2 types of firewalls and their locations?

A

The two types of firewalls are host-based firewalls and network-based firewalls. The host based firewall is a software that can be downloaded on the computer and the network-based firewall is a firewall that comes in between the internet and the private network.
